Masala Chai Loose Leaf Tea – Rich, Malty and Wonderfully Spiced

There’s something rather special about the aroma of freshly brewed Masala Chai. The rich scent of black tea mingles with ginger, cardamom, cloves and warming spices, filling the kitchen with a fragrance that’s hard to resist.

Our Masala Chai Loose Leaf Tea 60g combines full-flavoured black tea with a carefully balanced mixture of traditional chai spices.

The result is a rich, malty infusion with layers of warmth, gentle sweetness and a wonderfully aromatic finish.

Inspired by the traditional spiced teas enjoyed throughout India, this is a blend that can be enjoyed in several ways.

Brew it as a traditional cup of black tea, add a splash of milk, or prepare it with warm milk and a little sweetness for a more indulgent chai.

And if the aroma brings someone wandering into the kitchen asking what smells so lovely, you might find yourself making a second cup!

What Is Masala Chai?

Masala Chai has its roots in India, where spiced tea is an everyday favourite.

The word masala refers to a mixture of spices, while chai simply means tea.

Across India, families, cafés and chai wallahs have their own ways of preparing this much-loved drink.

Some prefer a stronger tea flavour, others enjoy more ginger or cardamom, and many prepare their chai by simmering tea and spices with milk and sugar.

There’s no single recipe that everyone follows.

Our Masala Chai brings together the rich character of black tea and a fragrant collection of spices, creating a blend that’s full of flavour without being overpowering.

It’s our own take on a wonderfully traditional cuppa.

A Beautiful Balance of Black Tea and Spices

The secret to a lovely Masala Chai is getting the balance between the tea and spices just right.

At the heart of our blend is black tea, providing a rich, malty base and the familiar depth of a proper cuppa.

Ginger adds a lively, warming note, while cassia contributes a sweet, cinnamon-like fragrance.

Black pepper introduces a gentle spiciness that gives the blend a little extra character.

Cardamom brings its distinctive aromatic flavour, with hints of sweetness and a fresh, fragrant finish.

Finally, cloves and nutmeg add depth and richness, rounding everything off beautifully.

Together, these ingredients create a warming, full-flavoured tea with plenty of personality.

No single spice needs to steal the show.

They work together to make something rather lovely.

What Does Masala Chai Loose Leaf Tea Taste Like?

Our Masala Chai produces a rich, deep amber infusion with a wonderfully inviting aroma.

The black tea provides a satisfying malty flavour, while the spices introduce layers of warmth and fragrance.

You’ll notice the familiar sweetness of cassia, the lively warmth of ginger and the distinctive aromatic notes of cardamom.

Black pepper adds a gentle kick, while cloves and nutmeg bring a rounded, spiced finish.

It’s a tea with plenty of depth, yet the different flavours remain beautifully balanced.

Enjoy it without milk for a more pronounced tea and spice character, or add milk to soften the flavour and create a smoother, creamier cup.

A little honey or sugar can also be rather lovely.

Masala Chai is traditionally enjoyed sweetened in many parts of India, but the final decision is entirely yours.

After all, it’s your cuppa!

How to Brew Masala Chai Loose Leaf Tea

One of the pleasures of loose leaf tea is being able to adjust the strength to suit your taste.

For a lovely everyday cup of Masala Chai, we recommend:

  • Use approximately one heaped teaspoon of loose leaf tea per person, around 2g.
  • Pour over freshly boiled water at 100°C.
  • Allow the tea to infuse for 3–7 minutes, depending on how strong you like it.
  • Strain and enjoy.

For a lighter cup, try a shorter infusion.

If you prefer a fuller, more pronounced flavour, allow the tea and spices to brew a little longer.

Enjoy it black, with a splash of milk or with a little sweetness.

A roomy tea infuser or teapot with a strainer works beautifully, giving the tea leaves and spices space to release their flavours.

Make a Creamy, Traditional-Style Masala Chai

If you fancy something a little different, Masala Chai is wonderful prepared with warm milk.

For one generous mug:

  1. Add approximately one heaped teaspoon of Masala Chai Loose Leaf Tea to 75ml of freshly boiled water.
  2. Allow the tea and spices to infuse for around 6 minutes, giving them time to develop a strong, fragrant flavour.
  3. Meanwhile, gently heat approximately 175ml of milk in a saucepan.
  4. Strain the concentrated tea into your mug and top up with the hot milk.
  5. Sweeten with a little honey or sugar if you wish.

For an even richer flavour, you can gently simmer the tea and spices with water in a saucepan before adding milk.

This brings the preparation a little closer to the way chai is traditionally made in many Indian households.

Whole milk gives a particularly creamy result, although oat milk also works beautifully if you prefer a plant-based alternative.

It’s the sort of drink that deserves a few minutes to sit down and enjoy.

Preferably before someone else claims your favourite chair!

Naturally Caffeinated Black Tea

Our Masala Chai Loose Leaf Tea contains traditional black tea, so it naturally contains caffeine.

The caffeine comes from the tea leaves rather than the spices.

The amount in each cup will vary depending on how much tea you use and how long you allow it to brew.

Its rich flavour makes it a lovely choice for a morning cuppa, an afternoon tea break or whenever you fancy something a little different from your usual black tea.

And if you enjoy the aromatic spices but prefer to avoid caffeine, we have another blend you might like.

Love Chai but Prefer a Caffeine-Free Cuppa?

Our Masala Rooibos Chai offers a lovely alternative for anyone who enjoys the fragrance of traditional chai spices without the caffeine.

Instead of black tea, it uses naturally caffeine-free South African rooibos, blended with ginger, cassia, black pepper, cardamom, cloves and nutmeg.

The rooibos brings a smooth, gently sweet character, while the spices provide that familiar warming chai flavour.

Unlike our loose leaf Masala Chai, Masala Rooibos Chai is available in tea bags only.

You can find Masala Rooibos Chai – 20 Tea Bags in our tea bag collection.

It’s a lovely option for an evening cuppa or whenever you fancy a fragrant, spiced infusion without caffeine.

Prefer Tea Bags? Try Our Masala Chai

If you enjoy this loose leaf blend but sometimes prefer the convenience of tea bags, we also make a tea bag version.

Our Masala Chai – 20 Tea Bags brings together the same combination of rich black tea and fragrant spices in biodegradable tea bags.

They’re handy for a quick cuppa at work, when travelling or whenever you don’t have your loose leaf infuser nearby.

Each box contains 20 biodegradable tea bags, packed in Cornwall with 100% plastic-free packaging.

So whether you enjoy the gentle ritual of preparing loose leaf chai or prefer the simplicity of a tea bag, there’s a Masala Chai to suit you.

Enjoy Masala Chai Throughout the Year

Masala Chai is often associated with warming, cosy drinks, but there’s no reason to save it for colder weather.

Its rich, fragrant character makes it a lovely companion to breakfast, an afternoon break or a leisurely weekend.

And when the weather turns warmer, you can enjoy the same blend chilled.

Brew a slightly stronger infusion using freshly boiled water, then strain and allow it to cool.

Serve over ice with a splash of cold milk for a refreshing iced chai.

A little sweetness works nicely, particularly if you enjoy the familiar creamy flavour of a traditional chai latte.

The combination of black tea, ginger and aromatic spices is just as interesting served cold as it is freshly brewed.

A proper all-year-round cuppa.
