Gunpowder Green Loose Leaf Tea – Bold, Fresh and Full of Character

There’s something rather fascinating about a tea that starts as a collection of tiny green pearls and gradually unfurls into beautiful leaves as it brews.

Our Gunpowder Green Loose Leaf Tea 50g is a traditional Chinese green tea with a distinctive appearance and a wonderfully satisfying flavour.

Each leaf is tightly rolled into a small pellet, giving Gunpowder Green its unusual name. There’s no actual gunpowder involved, thankfully!

As the leaves meet warm water, they begin to open, releasing their flavour and producing a refreshing green tea with a pleasantly robust character.

It’s a lovely choice for anyone who enjoys a proper green tea with a little more depth.

Whether you’re discovering loose leaf green tea for the first time or have been enjoying it for years, Gunpowder Green is well worth making room for in the tea cupboard.

Why Is It Called Gunpowder Green Tea?

The name might sound a little dramatic, but there’s a perfectly simple explanation.

Gunpowder Green Tea gets its name from the way the leaves are rolled into small, rounded pellets, traditionally thought to resemble grains of gunpowder.

This style of Chinese green tea has been enjoyed for generations.

Rolling the leaves helps protect them during handling and storage, while creating the distinctive appearance that makes Gunpowder Green so recognisable.

Once placed in warm water, the tightly rolled leaves slowly begin to unfurl.

It’s one of the pleasures of brewing loose leaf tea, particularly if you use a glass teapot where you can watch the leaves open.

A little tea-making entertainment, courtesy of the leaves themselves!

A Bold Green Tea With a Fresh, Rounded Flavour

Gunpowder Green has a more pronounced character than some of the lighter green teas.

Its flavour is typically fresh and gently grassy, with a rounded, slightly earthy depth and a pleasant lingering finish.

Depending on how strongly you brew it, you may also notice a subtle toasted quality.

The infusion develops a yellow-green colour, with an inviting aroma that makes it particularly enjoyable for anyone who appreciates traditional Chinese green tea.

It’s refreshing without needing added flavours, and interesting enough to enjoy entirely on its own.

If you’re used to lighter green teas, Gunpowder Green offers something a little different.

And if you already enjoy a strong green tea, its fuller character may be just what you’re looking for.

Watching the Leaves Unfurl

One of the loveliest things about loose leaf Gunpowder Green Tea is the brewing itself.

Unlike finely cut tea, the tightly rolled leaves have room to gradually open in the water.

As they unfurl, they release their flavour and aroma, transforming those little green pellets into recognisable tea leaves.

It’s a wonderful reminder that a good cup of tea begins with something surprisingly simple.

Tea leaves, water and a few minutes to spare.

You don’t need any elaborate equipment, either.

A teapot with a strainer, a roomy infuser or a suitable tea filter will do the job nicely.

Just give the leaves enough space to open.

After all, they’ve been rolled up quite tightly and deserve a little room to stretch!

How to Brew Gunpowder Green Loose Leaf Tea

Green tea generally prefers slightly cooler water than traditional black tea.

Using freshly boiled water straight from the kettle can bring out too much bitterness, particularly if the leaves are left to steep for too long.

For a lovely cup of Gunpowder Green, we recommend:

  • Use approximately one level teaspoon of loose leaf tea per person, around 2g.
  • Heat fresh water to approximately 80°C.
  • Pour the water over the leaves and allow them to infuse for 2–3 minutes.
  • Strain the tea and enjoy.

For a lighter, more delicate cup, try a shorter infusion.

If you enjoy a fuller flavour, experiment with a little more tea rather than leaving the leaves brewing for too long.

Gunpowder Green is generally best enjoyed without milk, allowing its fresh green tea character to come through.

And if you fancy a little sweetness, a touch of honey can be rather lovely.

These are only guidelines, of course.

It’s your cuppa, so you decide!

A Refreshing Tea for Every Season

There’s no need to save Gunpowder Green for a particular time of year.

Its fresh character makes it a lovely choice for a morning tea break, a leisurely afternoon or whenever you fancy something different from your usual brew.

Enjoy it freshly made and warm, allowing the gentle aroma to develop as you drink.

Or try it chilled for a refreshing green tea on a sunny afternoon.

To make iced Gunpowder Green Tea, prepare a slightly stronger infusion using water at around 80°C, strain the leaves and allow the tea to cool.

Pour over ice and add a slice of lemon or a sprig of fresh mint if you fancy a little extra flavour.

It’s a simple way to enjoy the same tea in a completely different style.

Naturally Caffeinated Green Tea

Gunpowder Green is made from the leaves of the tea plant, Camellia sinensis, so it naturally contains caffeine.

Like other traditional green teas, it makes a refreshing alternative to black tea while offering its own distinctive flavour.

The amount of caffeine in a cup can vary depending on how much tea you use and how long you brew it.

If you’re looking for a naturally caffeine-free alternative, our Peppermint Loose Leaf Tea is a lovely choice, with a fresh, cooling character.

For Gunpowder Green itself, there’s plenty to enjoy in its natural simplicity.

No added mint, fruit or spices.

Just traditional Chinese green tea, ready to brew exactly how you like it.
