English Breakfast Loose Leaf Tea 80g – A Proper Breakfast Brew

There’s something wonderfully reassuring about a proper cup of English Breakfast tea.

No fuss, no fancy additions. Just a good, satisfying brew that tastes exactly as a traditional breakfast tea should.

Our English Breakfast Loose Leaf Tea 80g brings together three classic black teas – Kenyan, Assam and Ceylon – to create a rich, full-bodied blend with plenty of character.

Each tea contributes something a little different.

Kenyan tea brings strength and brightness, Assam adds a wonderfully malty depth, and Ceylon provides a lively, well-rounded finish.

Together, they create a beautifully balanced breakfast tea that’s robust enough to enjoy with milk yet full of flavour when served black.

And although we’ve called it English Breakfast, there’s certainly no need to put the teapot away once breakfast is finished.

It’s just as lovely during a mid-morning break, alongside an afternoon biscuit or whenever you fancy a proper cuppa.

After all, a good cup of tea doesn’t need to know what time it is.

What Makes Our English Breakfast Tea Special?

English Breakfast tea is one of Britain’s best-loved black tea blends, but not every English Breakfast tastes the same.

Different tea makers use different combinations of leaves, each chosen to create a particular flavour and strength.

At Westcountry Tea Co, our English Breakfast combines three traditional black teas from three different tea-growing regions.

The strength of Kenyan tea, the malty richness of Assam and the bright character of Ceylon work together to create a satisfying, rounded cup.

Rather than relying on a single tea, the blend brings together the best qualities of each.

It’s a tea with enough body to stand up to a splash of milk, while still offering a lovely depth of flavour when enjoyed without.

A proper breakfast tea, made for people who appreciate a proper brew.

Kenyan Tea – Bright, Strong and Full of Character

Kenya is one of the world’s major tea-producing countries, known for growing black teas with a bright, lively character.

Kenyan tea often brings strength, colour and a brisk quality to traditional breakfast blends.

In our English Breakfast, it helps create that satisfying first impression you expect from a good morning cuppa.

Its bold character also makes it particularly well suited to milk, allowing the tea’s flavour to remain noticeable even when softened with a splash.

It’s an important part of what gives this blend its traditional breakfast tea personality.

Bright, robust and ready for the day.

Assam Tea – Rich and Wonderfully Malty

Assam tea comes from the Assam region of northeastern India, one of the world’s best-known black tea-growing areas.

It’s particularly loved for its rich, full-bodied flavour and distinctive malty notes.

These qualities make Assam a favourite ingredient in traditional breakfast tea blends.

In our English Breakfast, Assam contributes depth and a rounded richness that complements the brighter character of the Kenyan leaves.

It’s the sort of flavour that makes a strong cup of tea feel wonderfully satisfying.

Particularly when there’s a slice of buttered toast nearby.

Ceylon Tea – A Lovely Touch of Brightness

Ceylon tea comes from Sri Lanka, an island with a long and fascinating tea-growing history.

Ceylon black teas are often appreciated for their lively, refreshing character and balanced flavour.

In our English Breakfast blend, Ceylon adds another layer to the cup, helping balance the richness of Assam and the strength of Kenyan tea.

It brings a brightness that keeps the blend enjoyable rather than simply making it stronger.

And that’s what makes a good breakfast blend so appealing.

Not just strength, but balance.

Three different teas, each bringing something useful to the teapot.

What Does English Breakfast Loose Leaf Tea Taste Like?

Our English Breakfast Loose Leaf Tea is rich, full-bodied and beautifully rounded.

The Kenyan leaves provide a brisk, lively foundation, while Assam adds its familiar malty depth.

Ceylon contributes a brighter character, bringing the different flavours together.

The result is a satisfying black tea with plenty of body and a traditional breakfast tea finish.

It’s robust enough for those who enjoy a stronger cuppa, yet balanced enough to drink without milk.

With a splash of milk, the flavour becomes softer and creamier while retaining its distinctive black tea character.

Enjoyed black, the individual qualities of the tea leaves become more noticeable.

There’s no complicated tasting ritual required.

Just make a pot, pour yourself a cup and enjoy it exactly how you like it.

Why Choose Loose Leaf English Breakfast Tea?

There’s something particularly enjoyable about preparing a pot of loose leaf tea.

You can appreciate the tea leaves before brewing, enjoy the familiar aroma as the hot water meets them and adjust the quantity to suit your preferred strength.

A roomy teapot or infuser gives the leaves space to move freely, helping the flavours develop.

And because you’re using loose leaf tea, it’s easy to make a lighter cup or a stronger brew simply by adjusting the amount.

It’s also a lovely way to make tea for several people.

There’s something rather welcoming about putting a freshly brewed teapot on the table.

Especially when a quick visit turns into a long conversation.

And perhaps another pot.

How to Brew English Breakfast Loose Leaf Tea

For a rich, satisfying cup, we suggest:

  • Use approximately one teaspoon of loose leaf tea per person, around 2g.
  • Pour over freshly boiled water at 100°C.
  • Allow the tea to infuse for approximately 3–5 minutes.
  • Strain and serve.

For a lighter brew, begin with a shorter infusion.

If you enjoy a stronger breakfast tea, use a little more leaf or allow it to brew slightly longer.

Serve with milk, without milk or with a little sugar if that’s how you enjoy your tea.

And as for whether the milk should go in first or last, we’ll leave that particular debate to the experts around the kitchen table.

A Proper Cuppa with Milk – Or Without

English Breakfast is traditionally enjoyed with milk, and our blend is particularly well suited to it.

The strength of the Kenyan tea and the richness of Assam help the flavour stand up to a splash of milk.

Meanwhile, the Ceylon leaves bring a lovely brightness to the cup.

Together, they create a well-rounded tea that’s satisfying without needing to be overpowering.

But don’t overlook drinking it black.

Without milk, you can appreciate the different characteristics of the three teas more clearly.

A little sugar is entirely optional.

Some people wouldn’t dream of adding it, while others have been taking their tea sweet for years.

We’re not here to change anyone’s lifelong tea habits.

Does English Breakfast Tea Contain Caffeine?

Yes. Our English Breakfast is made entirely from traditional black tea leaves, so it naturally contains caffeine.

All three ingredients – Kenyan, Assam and Ceylon black teas – come from the tea plant, Camellia sinensis.

The amount of caffeine in a finished cup depends on factors such as how much tea you use and how long you allow it to brew.

English Breakfast is a popular morning choice, but it’s equally enjoyable throughout the day.

If you’re looking for a traditional black tea with most of the caffeine removed, our Decaffeinated Tea – 20 Tea Bags range offers another option.

Or, for something naturally caffeine-free, you might prefer one of our herbal or rooibos infusions.

More Than Just a Breakfast Tea

Despite its name, English Breakfast is far too versatile to save for the morning.

It’s a lovely companion to buttered toast, a traditional cooked breakfast or a simple bowl of porridge.

Later in the day, it’s equally at home alongside a slice of cake, a toasted teacake or a biscuit.

And because the blend has such a familiar, satisfying flavour, it’s a wonderful everyday tea to keep in the cupboard for visitors.

Some guests might ask for something unusual.

Others simply want a proper cup of tea.

English Breakfast is very good at taking care of the second group.

English Breakfast Tea for Every Season

A traditional black tea is one of those everyday pleasures that fits into every season.

On cooler mornings, a freshly brewed mug with a splash of milk makes a lovely start to the day.

During warmer weather, English Breakfast is just as enjoyable alongside breakfast in the garden.

You can even serve it chilled over ice.

For a simple iced version, brew the tea a little stronger than usual, strain and allow it to cool.

Add cold water to taste and serve over ice with a slice of lemon.

A little sweetness is optional.

It’s a refreshing way to enjoy a familiar favourite when you fancy something different.
